"In Crisis" is a work inspired by emotions, the toll on the body after the mind is affected, The return to that foetal position, to gain some element of comfort. I hope the viewer will sympathise with anyone suffering this kind of depression or mental turmoil. Maybe even relate to it from personal experience. Two artists that have inspired me are Gustav Vigeland and Per Ung. I use clay as my main medium, I find it a wonderful material for movement, and expressions, being able to alter textures relating to final work. In Crisis is worked in terracotta clay, then fired and patinated in various polishes and stains. Mounted on a base of veneered wood. I find the various clays one is able to use, lend themselves to different types of creating, different finishes, different weights optically. It is also very cathartic for me as I empathise with all of these emotion from one end of the spectrum to the other. I was born in Shoreditch, London some 50 years before it became the global centre of art it is today. My story is that of the area: I grew up in a working-class house, left school aged 15 and saw my artistic impulses frustrated by the vagaries of everyday life: first working my way up in the world of hair and beauty, owning a business aged 18, and then marrying and having children. In my fifties, with my children all having studied at university, I took the chance to devote time to my art in a way I had never been able to before. I channelled much of what I had learned and experienced in the prior decades, creating works themed around what it means to be a woman, a wife, a mother and an artist.
