This sculpture is an exploration of whimsy, strength, and precision. A newspaper photo over coffee of a dancer holding an arabesque position was my inspiration. I saw it as an articulation of strength and precision but at the same time, there was such joy and whimsy in the form that I had to create it in wood. When I decided to make the piece, white oak spoke to me as strong enough to embody this concept. White oak is also heavy so I labored to make the sculpture light and uplifted despite its weight. Finally, I steam-bent the chair's back legs in order to achieve the effect. Ships in 3 pieces: sculpture, pedestal, and anchor.

My dialogue centers on critiques of the destructive performances of normalized masculinity while honoring feminine beauty of strength. My intention is for the audience to attach human emotion to the piece and see themselves implicated in my social critiques, moving beyond complacency or routinized outrage to action.
