As the other half of a very loving and beautiful interracial relationship I was quite shocked when returning to the UK after 20 years living and working abroad that racism in this country is fully alive and kicking...not OK. I decided after several experiences to shout out about it and highlight again the injustices that people of color experience on a daily basis. Have we really gone backwards in our attempts to move forward, have we learnt nothing from the past? In this painting through acrylic and mixed media collage I explore the subject of racism with newspaper articles from past and present events. The black Santos appears stoically arriving into the left of frame with his 'pig of ignorance' on his lap, reminding the world of its reaction and attitude to what has been, what is present and questioning what is to come in the form of an unrolled carpet. To me the chandeliers represent the beautiful aspects of race and shed light and dark on the issues of fear; while the disjointed pieces of frame (I make my own frames from baroque off cuts!) highlight the somewhat shocking views we as humans have towards others and the conscious or unconscious paths we choose to take... WHERE DO WE WANT TO GO WITH THIS? Santos image courtesy of #Benjireid Photographer
