I have loved Lorca’s poem “Romance Sonámbul” since I listened to it countless times whilst developing a Spanish text to speech synthesizer in the mid to late 1980s. I can still vividly remember taking the synthesizer to an ONCE (Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles)/World Blind Union meeting in Madrid around that time. When I read about this competition it was Lorca’s poem that first came back to me as both inspiration and focus. This work is part of a series of my digital personal remembrance works. They are are currently based on one or more of writers, painters, sculptures, films, my work in Assistive Technology and travel. The foundation for this digital artwork is an abstract acrylic painting I produced early in 2019 that has been scanned and then digitally manipulated in a process using some Neural Style Transfer software I have been working on, and then the collage was put together in Photoshop. In this piece I have tried to encapsulate my warm feelings about the poem, Lorca and that time I spent in Spain.

For more than 30 years I have been working in the area of sensory stimulation with a specific interest in visual stimulation for children and adults with disabilities. My work has predominantly been with software to attract, engage and interact with people. I am fascinated by the light/colour of forms and their differing relationships to the objects around them. I believe that nature of the light is somewhat different when it is emitted from a screen rather than reflected from a surface. Some of my more recent software in this area can be seen at www.sensoryapphouse.com I also have a longstanding passion for modern art - particularly the works of many abstract expressionists. More recently I've been engaged in two different activities: abstract, mostly nonrepresentational painting with acrylics on various materials; and using Neural style transfer techniques as part of the process for producing digital works from images that hold particular memories for me.
